Production Placements

Production Placements at Stiwdio Clwyd provide short learning opportunities in theatre, across a broad range of disciplines and departments at Theatr Clwyd.

Each placement would be over 3 weeks at a point in a production cycle when we feel it would have the most meaningful impact on the development of the trainee and the team have the capacity to hold and support the development of that trainee.

Placements will be directly related to Theatr Clwyd productions.

Overall Expectations

Stiwdio Clwyd would expect people undertaking placements in Production to:

  • Currently be in some form of formal training related to the area of the placement
  • Have demonstrated a commitment to pursuing / exploring a career in the specific field or be currently training in that specific field
  • Be proactive in searching out opportunities to further their learning and development
  • Have a connection to Wales through either being based in, born in or currently training in Wales
  • Be over the age of 18 and legally eligible to work in the UK
  • Have a strong sense of enquiry and what they want to get out of a placement at Theatr Clwyd at this moment in their development.

Work placements are designed for college and university students. Please note that these are learning opportunities, not roles, and are unpaid although there is a budget to cover expenses. Each department will have different times when they are accepting applications, it is not possible to accept speculative applications at this time. If the department you are interested in is not listed as accepting applications, please check back here soon, as there are regular updates made to this page. All successful applicants will be expected to complete an evaluation form on completion of their placement to enable Theatr Clwyd to continue to learn and develop to make these placements as impactful as possible.

PLEASE NOTE: These Production Placements will not be available in Acting, Writing, Directing, Casting. Applications should be a short expression of interest and either a CV, biog or portfolio. In the expression of interest, please tell us how this placement fits within your career plan. Do not worry if these plans are not fully formed but some rough outlines and aspirations are good. You are welcome to link to proofs of work if this exists on-line. Think about how what you are sharing relates to what you’ll be doing on your placement according to the placement information below.

In your application, please do not over-exaggerate your level of experience. If we offer you a placement it will be fitted to what we know about your experience and how we can help develop your current skillset.

Please do not apply for more than one placement across different departments at the same time – please focus on where you feel a placement would have the greatest impact on your development.

Current Opportunities

Wardrobe Placement

A three week placement in our award-winning Wardrobe Department that will give you an invaluable insight into the techniques and skills used in creating our work.

The Wardrobe Team at Theatr Clwyd would expect people undertaking placements in this department to –

· Be currently training for a career in costume making at degree level, or equivalent.

· Have very good hand and machine sewing skills.

· Have some practical understanding of costume making.

· Show a strong interest in theatre costume design and current theatre designers.

The Wardrobe Team will undertake / provide the following during your placement –

· You will spend time in the workroom helping the costume makers prepare costumes for a specific show, with the opportunity to join us in any relevant fittings, meetings and runs.

· Depending on timing, you will help us to set up dressing rooms and quick change areas for the technical rehearsals, and help the department respond to costume notes over the technical rehearsals.

· You may have the opportunity to spend time backstage with the dressers and with costume maintenance.

Bursary available to cover expenses for placement - £835.00


Lighting Placement

A three week placement (please note specific dates outlined below) to join our award-winning lighting team that will give you an invaluable insight into the techniques and skills used in creating our work.

The Lighting Team at Theatr Clwyd would expect people undertaking placements in this department to –

· To have an active interest in theatre specific lighting.

· To have had some experience within a school or training environment although not essential.

· Be prepared to be involved with small amounts of hands-on practical work where suitable.

The Lighting Team will undertake / provide the following during your placement –

· An overview of the pre-production process.

· Opportunity to experience the processes of a fit up with regards to lighting.

· Experience the Technical rehearsal process with the programmer and support electrician.
