Trainee Placements on Under Milk Wood
We are delighted to be offering placement opportunities in two areas of the production for talented theatre-makers:
1. Trainee Set & Costume Design Placement
2. Trainee Lighting & Video Design Placement.
This is open to theatre-makers (with a particular focus on Designers and Lighting / Video Designers) who have strong ties to Wales due to being born, raised or currently living in Wales and who identify as either Deaf, disabled and/or Neurodivergent.
They will benefit from a unique and bespoke package of support at Theatr Clwyd through the Craidd initiative.
We will offer these theatre-makers the opportunity to engage deeply with our 2026 production of Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas, directed by Kate Wasserberg.
The theatre-makers will also have the opportunity to explore their creativity in dialogue with the Theatre Making team at Theatr Clwyd.
These trainee placement positions will be full-time at Theatr Clwyd from 26th January to 20th March 2026. You will be expected to be at Theatr Clwyd full-time during this period

FAQs
What is Craidd?
Craidd is an ambitious sector-wide collaboration across five Welsh theatre organisations dedicated to transforming DDN (Deaf, disabled and neurodivergent) representation in mainstream theatre.
Craidd is a collaboration between five Welsh organisations: Theatr Clwyd, Sherman Theatre, Pontio Arts, the Torch Theatre, and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. Its mission is to improve mainstream representation, for and with Deaf, disabled, and neurodivergent theatre makers across Wales. It also aims to drive positive change in the partner organisations involved as well as the wider theatre sector.
Theatr Clwyd is the lead partner on this initiative and the forthcoming production of Under Milk Wood will be the inaugural production in this partnership. The production will then tour to the Sherman Theatre, Pontio Arts, and the Torch Theatre.
What about access?
As part of the application process, we are asking you to let us know of any access support you may require to attend the interviews. This will not form part of the shortlisting and will only be read if you are shortlisted. You can either answer the question or provide an Access Rider.
If you are awarded the placement, we will work with you to support access needs. We will ask you to complete a “Work With Me” form and, if you have one, provide an Access Rider. We will work with you to help you feel comfortable and do your best work.
If you are in receipt of Access to Work we would expect you to use whatever is currently provided for you during the placement.
If access requirements mean that the budget provided is not sufficient we will assist you in making a claim for Access to Work.
We will also provide more detailed information on what to prepare for the day including sending the interview questions in advance. This information will be delivered in written format, but other formats will be available on request.
Do I need to have read Under Milk Wood before applying?
It is not absolutely necessary but it might be useful to read it and look into it a bit to see if it creatively sparks your imagination.
More information about Under Milk Wood can be found here.
Do I need to live in Mold?
No, this opportunity is open to any Welsh and Wales-based theatre-makers.
You will be provided with a budget towards expenses for travel and subsistence. This budget is based on Equity / UK Theatre rates. We will support you to source accommodation if necessary.
How do you define 'professional' in terms of experience?
For the purposes of this opportunity, 'professional' is defined as receiving payment for your work or people having paid to see your work.
What is the shortlisting process and how are people selected?
All applications will be considered and scored by three separate individuals – a member of the Craidd team, a member of the Theatr Making Family at Theatr Clwyd and a member of the Senior Leadership Team from Theatr Clwyd who will score against each element of 'Essential Criteria' in the Information Pack. Scores will be out of 5.
If applicants have the same score, the panel will move on to 'Desirable Criteria' to inform the shortlisting selection.
4 candidates will then be invited to interview.
What will happen in the interview?
If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to come to Theatr Clwyd in person for an interview.
For the Lighting & Video Design Placement, the interviews will coincide with the Final Design Meeting. This will enable the shortlisted candidates to observe this meeting and have a brief introduction to the production.
The interview will be approximately 45 minutes in length and will be with a member of the Creative Team on the production, a member of the Making Team at Theatr Clwyd, a senior member of Theatr Clwyd and a member of the Craidd team.
You will be sent questions in advance – everyone will have the same questions. There will also be an opportunity for you to ask questions. The interview will be in English.
Theatr Clwyd will be arranging a range of access support across the interviews, but we are aware you may need more bespoke support to access the day.
Theatr Clwyd will pay for and arrange for sufficient BSL interpreters, creative enablers and audio describers to be available in the space, including at the individual session if required.
Can I bring my own support person with me?
Theatr Clwyd will be arranging various access support across the interviews for placements, but we are aware you may need more one-on-one support with a trusted individual to access the day. We’ll discuss that with you when we invite you for interview.
Theatr Clwyd will pay for and arrange for sufficient BSL interpreters, creative enablers and audio describers to be available in the space.
What happens at a final design meeting?
A Final Design Meeting in the theatre is a critical stage where the creative team, including the director, designers, and technical team, gather to review and refine the production's designs, focusing on technical feasibility, budget, and overall artistic vision. It's a collaborative process where questions are asked, ideas are exchanged, and final decisions are made before the production moves into the build and rehearsal stages.
