Playful, witty and irresistibly charming, The Anonymous Lover is a sparkling romantic comedy about the risks and rewards of falling in love.

Léontine, a wealthy widow, swears she’ll never love again after an unhappy marriage. When mysterious letters and thoughtful gifts begin arriving from a secret admirer, her resolve starts to waver. The sender is her friend Valcour, who hides his identity, fearing rejection because of his lower social standing. As Léontine searches for the truth, Valcour must decide whether to reveal himself or remain anonymous.

Rarely performed, The Anonymous Lover is the only surviving opera by French composer Joseph Bologne and is brought to life in a vibrant new staging, with the orchestra on stage in an energetic baroque-inspired world. Faithful to Bologne’s elegant score, it also introduces a fresh, contemporary voice that speaks directly to the audience - inviting you to look again, think differently, and decide for yourself what shapes the way we experience great art.
