Production Placements
Production Placements at Stiwdio Clwyd provide short learning opportunities in theatre, across a broad range of disciplines and departments at Theatr Clwyd.
Each placement would be over 3 weeks at a point in a production cycle when we feel it would have the most meaningful impact on the development of the trainee and the team have the capacity to hold and support the development of that trainee.
Placements will be directly related to Theatr Clwyd productions.
Overall Expectations
Stiwdio Clwyd would expect people undertaking placements in Production to:
- Currently be in some form of formal training related to the area of the placement
- Have demonstrated a commitment to pursuing / exploring a career in the specific field or be currently training in that specific field
- Be proactive in searching out opportunities to further their learning and development
- Have a connection to Wales through either being based in, born in or currently training in Wales
- Be over the age of 18 and legally eligible to work in the UK
- Have a strong sense of enquiry and what they want to get out of a placement at Theatr Clwyd at this moment in their development.
Work placements are designed for college and university students. Please note that these are learning opportunities, not roles, and are unpaid although there is a budget to cover expenses. If the department or area of specialism that you are interested in is currently accepting applications for a production placement please view the role outlines on this page. Each department will have different times when they are accepting applications, it is not possible to accept speculative applications at this time. If the department you are interested in is not listed as accepting applications, please check back here soon, as there are regular updates made to this page. All successful applicants will be expected to complete an evaluation form on completion of their placement to enable Theatr Clwyd to continue to learn and develop to make these placements as impactful as possible.
PLEASE NOTE: These Production Placements will not be available in Acting, Writing, Directing, Casting. Applications should be a short expression of interest and either a CV, biog or portfolio. In the expression of interest, please tell us how this placement fits within your career plan. Do not worry if these plans are not fully formed but some rough outlines and aspirations are good. You are welcome to link to proofs of work if this exists on-line. Think about how what you are sharing relates to what you’ll be doing on your placement according to the placement information below.
In your application, please do not over-exaggerate your level of experience. If we offer you a placement it will be fitted to what we know about your experience and how we can help develop your current skillset.
Please do not apply for more than one placement across different departments at the same time – please focus on where you feel a placement would have the greatest impact on your development.

Current Opportunities
Scenic Art Placement
A three week placement in our award-winning Scenic Art Department that will give you an invaluable insight into the techniques and skills used in creating our work.
The Scenic Art Teams at Theatr Clwyd would expect people undertaking placements in this department to:
- Arrive willing to learn, with an open mind and a strong work ethic.
- Have a high level of independent motivation and initiative.
- Show a keen interest in theatre performance, design and production.
- Have some demonstrable experience and understanding of working in a workshop, ideally amongst a team.
- Understand safe working and PPE, a clear grounding in the importance of personal safety and others around, a basic level of understanding of working with hazardous substances and working at height.
- Basic understanding and terminology of theatre scenery, understanding all types of construction and cloths.
- Basic key foundation in painting and decorating. (Basic painting and brush techniques, cleaning looking after brushes and equipment)
- Have some practise at drawing from observation, working in 1:25 scale, figurative drawing, scenic art techniques such as trompe-l’oeil, and faux finishing, marbling etc.
- An understanding of colour theory with basic paint mixing skills and knowledge of scenic paints. (Dry pigments, working with Glaze, dyes, Rosco, textures, etc)
- Understanding and practise of 3D texture work, sculpture work. Carving, modelling, etc.
- Understanding of the use CAD in the interpretation of the set.
The Scenic Art Team will undertake / provide the following during your placement:
- An opportunity to work within a professional theatre making team alongside a busy working theatre Working day to day with the scenic art team within a purpose-built paint shop with a Paint frame.
- Assisting on the preparation, painting and finishing of various professional large scale set pieces and cloths.
- Offering an opportunity to observe and learn detailed painting techniques on a variety of materials, (show specific) Practical experience of scenic art practices and techniques such as: Interpreting the design and scenic intention, scaling up from the model, marking up, preparation and prime coating, paint mixing and scenic finishing.
- An opportunity to experience/understand the scenic art production process from the final model meeting though to show opening. Including experiencing the process of scenic support given on show fit ups and technical rehearsals.
- Day to day observation and experience of the collaboration between set construction and scenic art and the dialogue process with the set designer.
- Clear instruction, supervision and necessary PPE for work undertaken.

Bursary available to cover expenses for placement - £835.00
Scenic Construction
A three week placement in our Scenic Construction Department that will give you an invaluable insight into the techniques and skills used in creating our work.
The Scenic Construction team at Theatr Clwyd would expect people undertaking placements within this department to:
- Arrive willing to learn, with an open mind and a strong work ethic.
- Have a high level of independent motivation and initiative.
- Show a keen interest in theatre performance, design and production.
- Have some demonstrable experience and understanding of working in a workshop, ideally amongst a team.
- Understand safe working and PPE, a clear grounding in the importance of personal safety and others around, a basic level of understanding of working with hazardous substances and working at height.
- Have some foundation in construction, e.g.; some prior experience of joinery/carpentry, metalworking/fabrication/machining or other making/construction skills gained either through education or prior employment.
- A willingness to use a variety of machines/tools commonly used in construction such as; powered saw, drilling machines, air nailers, air staplers, grinding machines etc.
The Scenic Construction team will undertake / provide the following during the placement:
- An opportunity to work within a professional theatre making team
- To assist in the planning, construction and delivery of set and prop elements for a professional theatre production/s.
- An opportunity to experience/understand the scenic construction production process from the final model meeting though to show opening.
- Day to day observation and experience of the collaboration between set construction and scenic art, along with other departments and stakeholders.
- Clear instruction, supervision and necessary PPE for work undertaken.
