Open Call for Production & Technical Roles for Theatr Clwyd’s Production of UNDER MILK WOOD
We are inviting people to submit their interest and CV for consideration to join the Production and Technical teams for UNDER MILK WOOD, directed by Kate Wasserberg, opening at Theatr Clwyd and touring to the Sherman Theatre, Torch Theatre and Pontio in 2026.
Under Milk Wood is the first production in the Craidd initiative, a collaboration between five Welsh organisations - Theatr Clwyd, Sherman Theatre, Pontio Arts, the Torch Theatre, and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. Its mission is to improve mainstream representation, for and with Deaf, disabled, and neurodivergent theatre makers across Wales. It also aims to drive positive change in the partner organisations involved as well as the wider theatre sector.

Theatr Clwyd are creating a new touring version of Under Milk Wood which will rehearse and open at Theatr Clwyd and then tour to three partner venues. The show is part of the new Arts Council Wales Craidd initiative to improve mainstream representation, for and with Deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people across Wales. It also aims to drive positive change in the partner organisations involved as well as within the wider theatre sector. The production consists of a cast of 11.

Assistant Stage Manager (Book Cover)
Details of Role:
The ASM will support rehearsals by sourcing and making props as required from the props list. For maintaining props and sourcing running props in the rehearsal room, stage and tour.
The ASM will also support rehearsals by covering the DSM as required, running props and furniture in run throughs and keeping the rehearsal room clean and tidy. The ASM will support the rehearsal process with mark ups and any other duties as required.
During technical and dress rehearsals and performances the ASM is responsible for pre-setting all props, conducting a shout check, and for delivering cues as required from the running list. The ASM will work closely with stage crew in ensuring all scene changes are completed appropriately.
The ASM (book cover) will learn to call the show by shadowing the DSM during the run at Theatr Clwyd. The ASM (book cover) will call the show in the unlikely absence of the DSM. In this case the Technical Assistant will cover the ASM show plot.
The ASM is responsible for setting up the wings in each venue and for packing all props and furniture up in a manner that ensures they will safely travel to the next venue.
The ASM is responsible for producing the props bible for the show.
Under Milk Wood is a Theatre Green Book Baseline show and all props need to be sourced with this in mind; experience in the Green Book is not essential and support and guidance will be given during the rehearsal process.
The ASM (Book Cover) will abide by all Theatr Clwyd policies and procedures and will be line managed by Company Stage Manager.
Caption Operator
Details of Role:
The Caption Operator will join the production in the final week of rehearsals and will work with the Lighting and Video Designers in the rehearsal room to learn the show. The caption operator will then be operating the creative captions via Qlab for the technical and dress rehearsals and all performances.
The captions will be for a combination of BSL and spoken English.
This role requires experience of BSL reading skills
When on tour the video engineer will install the creative captioning system and hand it over to the captioner for operation. The Touring Technical Manager will be onsite tech support should there be any technical issues with the captioning set up.
The Technical Assistant will learn the Captioning plot during the run at Clwyd to cover captioning in case of emergency.
The Caption Operator will abide by all Theatr Clwyd policies and procedures and will be line managed by Hannah Lobb (Theatr Clwyd Head of Production).
Head of Sound
Details of Role:
The touring Head of Sound will join the production in the final week of rehearsals/fit up week. The Production Sound responsibilities for the Theatr Clwyd production period will be looked after by the Theatr Clwyd Sound Department.
The company will all be wearing radio mic’s and the technical tour manager and technical assistant will support the Head of Sound for daily rig and mic checks and stage management will support backstage during the show.
The show will tour a small amount of equipment; TBC at the moment but likely to include:
· Sound Desk
· Radio Mics
· Rifle Mics
· Qlab rack
The Touring Head of Sound will be responsible for the install of the touring sound equipment in each venue as well as amending and altering the inhouse PA as required for the show.
The Touring Head of Sound will be responsible for the sound operation of the show (including operating qlab and radio mics), looking after the sound equipment and ensuring high production values at all times.
The Touring Head of Sound will be present for the fit up and get out at all venues and is also responsible for loading and unloading the truck as necessary.
The Technical Assistant will learn the mixing of the show during the run at Theatr Clwyd to be able to provide emergency cover as needed.
The Touring Head of Sound will abide by all Theatr Clwyd policies and procedures and will be line managed by Hannah Lobb (Theatr Clwyd Head of Production).
Production Carpenter
Details of Role:
The Production Carpenter will be onsite for each fit up and will work with the production manager and partner venue crew to ensure the safe and secure installation of all scenic elements.
The Production Carpenter will abide by all Theatr Clwyd policies and procedures and will be line managed by Hannah Lobb (Theatr Clwyd Head of Production).
Relighter
Details of Role:
This production rehearses and opens at Theatr Clwyd; the initial production electrics will be looked after by the Theatr Clwyd Lighting department who will hand the show over to the Relighter for the tour.
The Relighter will be responsible for the fit up and installation of all hired and venue lighting equipment. The lighting plans will be compiled by the Lighting Designers and touring paperwork will be compiled by the Relighter. The Relighter will focus the lighting rig and ensure the show is relit in line with the original design of the piece. The Relighter is also responsible for backstage lighting as required.
This role must have experience with intelligent lighting rigs and moving light programming.
Under Milk Wood is using Lighting, Video and Creative Captioning and so the Relighter will need to work in collaboration with the Video Engineer to ensure the aesthetic of all designs are sympathetically balance.
The Relighter will hand over to the Touring Technical Manager for the run in each venue.
The Relighter will abide by all Theatr Clwyd policies and procedures and will be line managed by Hannah Lobb (Theatr Clwyd Head of Production).
Technical Assistant
Details of Role:
The Technical Assistant will support the Touring Technical Manager and Production Manager on fit ups and get outs as required.
The Technical Assistant will support and work closely with the Touring Technical Manager for daily checks on lighting, video and sound equipment.
The Technical Assistant will cover Sound no 2 responsibilities during the performance as required.
During the run at Theatr Clwyd the Technical Assistant will learn the following plots and will then cover them as rota’d by the Company Stage Manager during the tour.

· Head of Sound
The Technical Swing will abide by all Theatr Clwyd policies and procedures and will be line managed by Hannah Lobb (Theatr Clwyd Head of Production)
Touring Technical Manager
Details of Role:
The Touring Technical Manager will join the production in the final week of the run at Theatr Clwyd.
The Touring Technical Manager will be responsible for the daily running, maintenance, fault finding and repair of the touring lighting, video and caption equipment. They will work alongside the Video Engineer and the Relighter on the fit up to ensure all equipment is installed and operational.
The Technical Tour Manager will talk through the followspot plots with the venue followspot operators and will “call” the followspots for the first run through in each venue.
The Touring Technical Manager will be responsible for daily checks and maintenance of the lighting, video and caption systems and to work with the Head of Sound for mic and sound checks. This role is unlikely to have a specific show plot as they will need to remain available to fault find and fix any issues during performance.
The Technical Assistant will work closely with the Technical Manager to look after the technical equipment on the tour.
Incase of the Technical Assistant having to cover one of the technical show plots the Technical Manager will cover the Sound No 2 duties during a performance.
The Touring Technical Manager will be present for the fit up and get out at all venues and is also responsible for loading and unloading the truck as necessary.
The Touring Technical Manager will abide by all Theatr Clwyd policies and procedures and will be line managed by Hannah Lobb (Theatr Clwyd Head of Production).
Video Engineer
Details of Role:
They will be responsible for the fit up and installation of all hired and venue video and captioning equipment. The video plans will be produced by the Video Designers and touring paperwork will be compiled by the Video Engineer.
Once on tour the Video Engineer will install all video equipment and ensure the video content is replicated line with the original design of the piece. The Video Engineer is also responsible for commissioning the Creative Captioning set up and handing over to the Caption Operator for the run in each venue.
Under Milk Wood is using Lighting, Video and Creative Captioning and so the Video Engineer will need to work in collaboration with the Relighter to ensure the aesthetic of all designs are sympathetically balance.
The Video Engineer will hand over to the Touring Technical Manager for the run in each venue.
The Video Engineer will abide by all Theatr Clwyd policies and procedures and will be line managed by Hannah Lobb (Theatr Clwyd Head of Production)
Wardrobe Manager
Details of Role:
The Wardrobe Manager will join the production in the final week of the rehearsals at Theatr Clwyd.
The Wardrobe Manager is responsible for:
· Creating dressing plots for themselves and 1 x dresser
· Setting up backstage quick change areas in all venues
· Laundry and maintenance during the run and tour
· Setting up touring wardrobe in all venues
· Teaching the dressing plot to the local venue dresser on tour
· Packing all costumes after the final performance in each venue in time for the end of the load out
The Wardrobe Manager will abide by all Theatr Clwyd policies and procedures and will be line managed by Hannah Lobb (Head of Production Theatr Clwyd).
WHAM Assistant
Details of Role:
The WHAM Assistant will join the production in the final week of the rehearsals at Theatr Clwyd.
The WHAM Assistant is responsible for:
· Creating WHAM plots for themselves in collaboration with the WHAM Supervisor
· Setting up backstage quick change areas in all venues
· WHAM plot during all performances
· WHAM maintenance during the run and tour
· Setting up touring WHAM in all venues
· Packing all WHAM after the final performance in each venue in time for the end of the load out
The WHAM Manager will abide by all Theatr Clwyd policies and procedures and will be line managed by Hannah Lobb (Theatr Clwyd Head of Production)
