Call out: Welsh-language Captioning Training for Freelancers
Job Description

Theatr Clwyd is providing a paid training opportunity for local freelance artists who are Welsh speakers. We are looking to enhance our pool of bi-lingual theatre captioners, as we seek to improve our Welsh language and bi-lingual offer to audiences. You do not have to have any previous experience in captioning to apply, but you do need to have a high level of Welsh language skill, and some computer skills.
We are looking for artists who are brand new to captioning and can commit to three days’ learning at our site in Mold, with two days in Feb 2023 and a further date in March TBC. As part of this training, you will gain an overview of captioning as an access tool, plus training on our captioning software, called Venue. The training will be delivered by the team who developed the software from the company Digital4.
Following this training, there may be a further opportunity to join us for an up-coming production at Theatr Clwyd – Truth or Dare, which will be a 4-week paid contract.
Important info:
- The first two days of the training are Mon 20th and Tue 21st Feb 2023, which would be in person at our offices in Mold.
- The third day of training would take place a week or so later on a date TBC – this is because after the first two days, you would be expected to continue some self-guided learning on the software, so that the third day is a consolidation day.
- Fee: £360 all-inclusive fee for the training. Additionally, we can offer a travel allowance of £20.
How to apply:
- Please email Wesley.bennett-pearce@theatrclwyd.com with your CV along with a short cover note in whatever format is best for you. We would like to know your level of Welsh language reading & writing, as well as why this opportunity would be beneficial for your development. We encourage applications to be made in the Welsh Language.
Deadline:
- 5pm on Tue 31 Jan 2023.
If you have any questions, please email Wesley.Bennett-pearce@theatrclwyd.com and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
About Theatr Clwyd
Theatr Clwyd is a cultural hub, producing world-class theatre in the hills of North Wales. Since 1976 we have been serving our communities and delivering the highest quality theatre and arts experience for the people of Wales and beyond.
Our mission is fundamental to us in all that we do:
To make the world a happier place, one moment at a time.
We are fortunate to be one of very few theatres in the UK to build sets, make costumes, paint scenery and create props in-house. These essential theatre making skills ensure that we can push theatrical boundaries to create stunning shows from the seed of a writer’s or creative’s imagination. Since 2018 this has been recognised by the theatre industry with awards from UK Theatre, The Stage and the Olivier’s.
The development of theatre makers and artists is key to sustaining Wales’ and the UK’s cultural landscape. We hold residencies for writers and companies, alongside technical apprenticeships and traineeships for directors, to create a building which supports emerging creatives and craftspeople in developing artistic excellence.
We use our skills to underpin social transformation in our communities. We creatively address social and educational challenges such as youth justice while bridging social and economic divides. We recognise the immediate impact and long term benefits the arts can provide to aid psychological and physical wellbeing.
