The Laramie Project
5 September 2019
20 years later The Laramie Project is still powerfully resonant and relevant to modern society as we know it. The play serves as a catalyst for discussion and has a redemptive quality that will fill you with hope, told through a mix of real testimony and live music.
The Laramie Project tells the true story of the brutal attack of Matthew Shephard in 1998. Matthew was a gay student from the University of Wyoming, who was savagely beaten and left tied to a fence to die. One year later Moises Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theatre Company visited Laramie six times and spoke to more than 200 people. The result is an engrossing docu-drama that testifies to the seismic impact of a hate crime on a small town to the whole of America. The play shows Americans at their sentimental best and their god-fearing worst.
