‘Love changes us. Love’s alchemy! In that furnace everything changes. Hard stone shatters, iron goes soft and turns to liquid… and so do we…. in love’s fire!’
In an atmosphere of intense religious puritanism of the early 17th century, Susanna Hall is publicly accused of adultery with her neighbour and family friend Rafe Smith. Her husband, Dr John Hall, urges her to sue for slander in the court of Worcester Cathedral to save the family’s reputation and his practice as a distinguished physician.
But how can she explain why Smith was seen leaving the herbal garden late one night when the doctor was away from home? The events of that fateful night are held up to the most searching scrutiny in this gripping thriller.
Based on an actual court case of 1613 involving Susanna, the eldest daughter of William Shakespeare, The Herbal Bed was nominated for an Olivier Award, won Playwright of the Year for its author and was a hit in theWest Endand on Broadway.
Peter Whelan’s plays include The Accrington Pals, The School of Night and A Russian in the Woods.
